Animal Pride Socks

I am grieving the loss of a pair of socks that has “Love is Love” written on them in a cursive-y rainbow font (on a black background). After a scant year (of wearing them frequently), a hole has worn through. By which I mean that I have worn a hole through them. There’s no one else to blame. No simple use of the passive will indemnify me from the adult consequences of my hosiery (mis)conduct.

Naturally, no other pair of socks could ever replace these in my heart. They still hug my feet at this very moment, as I delay their removal and subsequent disposal. Dauntingly, bedtime loometh large, and we shall have to part. Such sweet sorrow.

That said, I have found a pair that look just like them on Amazon... only the caption says, “Good Luck Sock Men’s Animal Socks.”

Whyyy?

“Animal” socks?

Why would they worry me uselessly like this with a mismatched label?

Bastards.

How do I know for sure what I’m gonna get?

So, yeah, I have gone ahead and ordered some, but are the Pride socks going to arrive, or some kinda animal socks?

If it’s animal socks, then I swear I’m gonna... well, okay, I will probably still love them.

But I will not be happy.

Well, yes, okay, fine, I will be happy about the animal socks. But I will not be happy about not having my Pride socks anymore.

I dunno. Maybe the manufacturers got confused, and they think that “Pride” means like “a pride of animals”?

Which it kinda does... but still.

And here’s what gets me the most: there’s no canonical name in English for this heavily nuanced emotion that I am feeling. I’ve felt it before, and no doubt will feel it again, and it’s a cohesive thing, but there’s no monolithic word for it... none that comes to mind with a diligent search, anyway.

So I’m gonna read Tiffany Watt Smith’s work entitled, “The Book of Human Emotions,” just to see if there’s a word for it in there, maybe in some other language. So here goes...

It’s not in the As.

Nor the Bs.

Etm.

Nope. Nothing.

What a pisser.
